Philosophy
Newman strives for excellence in all things—academic excellence, personal excellence, and human excellence. A very talented and dedicated faculty work with students, from the earliest learners to those bound for our nation’s strongest colleges and universities, to help them develop their academic and intellectual gifts and interests. We are justifiably proud of our students and their very significant level of academic accomplishment. Yet academic accomplishment alone is inadequate. We expect our students to be decent human beings—to exhibit daily the School’s core values of honesty, kindness, respect, and responsibility. We expect a lot of our students and they, in turn, expect a great deal of themselves. We fully expect Newman graduates to use their considerable talents to make meaningful contributions in their communities and in our world.
The foundation for lifelong learning is laid in the earliest grades, where the school motto, “Discimus Agere Agendo,” translated as “We learn to do by doing,” is the norm. Children comfortably explore new concepts, take risks and share their ideas in classrooms that are warm, nurturing laboratories for education. Teachers encourage even the youngest students to research and experiment independently.

Each student in lower school begins his/her education at a different point in the education continuum and teachers help them develop and mature at their own pace. We challenge each child to reach his/her potential with careful consideration being given to individual learning styles.
Creative, participatory learning experiences enrich our middle school curriculum. With class sizes averaging 15 students, the sense of community is immediate. Students work closely with their teacher and with each other so that everyone feels included and part of a group.

In the upper school, a continued commitment to personal attention and individualized instruction promotes the success that we believe every student is capable of. We truly care about our students as people and outstanding scholars, that’s why we challenge them with a rigorous course load in their final years at the School.

By the time a student leaves Newman School, he or she is well-prepared to continue the learning process at some of the nation’s top universities and lead a life as an active, able member of society.
