In his first year at Newman in 2006, Matt Innes established himself as a skilled, demanding, fair and loved teacher. In 2007, he won a Dads Club award for outstanding new teacher. He was a favorite of last year’s senior class and this year’s as well. Known for his high standards and his emphasis on writing, students often make a special effort to choose the electives that Matt teaches because they see him as a teacher who cares about them and is always willing to help them, particularly with their writing. Some of his students indicate that Matt has helped improve their writing more than any other teacher at Newman. Matt has been an important team member for the Senior Seminar course and has brought an international perspective to the course, even traveling to Haiti last summer to examine the poverty there as well as the ties between that country and New Orleans. Well versed in a wide range of academic areas, Matt is a curious and voracious learner. Matt was a teacher at St. Martin’s and an instructor at Tulane before coming to Newman. In another life, he was a lawyer in London. He has a bachelors and a master’s degree in English Literature from Oxford University and a law degree from Tulane. |
