Recent Alumnae Shine in College Athletics
9/14/2007
Check out Elena Martinez ’05, a volleyball player at Louisiana State University! She was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week in early September.

Elena, a junior, leads the SEC with a staggering 5.71 digs per game. In her first season as the starting libero, Martinez broke the school record with 34 digs against Iowa and has posted four of the top 20 dig marks in LSU history in only nine matches this season. Having already reached the 200-dig mark for the year, she is already halfway to breaking into the top 10 in single-season digs in school history. To read her profile, click here.

And how about a Greenie cheer for our very own Catherine Frampton! Last year’s Newman graduate was recently “Tiger of the Week” at Sewanee. Click here to read more.

Emily Clements ‘06 is doing her part with the UCLA volleyball team, ranked fifth in the nation. Click here for her profile.

And finally, Newman alumna and volleyball All-American Meg Henican ‘02 was recently hired at Tulane University as an assistant volleyball coach. Click here for the article that ran in the Times-Picayune.
Chris Mooney '95 "Storms" New Orleans with His Latest Book
7/25/2007
Chris Mooney ’95 stopped by New Orleans in early July while on tour for his latest book, Storm World: Hurricanes, Politics and the Battle Over Global Warming (Harcourt, 2007). A packed house at Octavia Books was riveted by Chris’s lively and sometimes frightening discussion of the role global warming may be playing in the recent spate of intense hurricanes. There were at least half a dozen Newman alumni in attendance, including several members of the Class of 1995.
Newman Grads Working on the Hill
4/18/2007
On a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Newman college counselor Ed Graf was pleasantly surprised to discover several Newman graduates working on Capitol Hill. Ed attended the annual Legislative Conference for the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Ed, along with Laurie Leftwich of Brother Martin High School, represented Louisiana; he was there in part to lobby the state’s delegation on issues relating to the inclusion of school counselors in the No Child Left Behind Act and the Higher Education Act.
