From its inception in 1998 until its last year in 2004, Newman won the all-around athletics award 5 times: in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2003 and 2004, Newman was the runner up. Also, three GatorAde Athletes obtained national awards in three consecutive years.
Recently, Ned Waller (soccer) and Elena Martinez (volleyball) were awarded state championships. Three Newman students have received national awards: Randy Livingston (basketball) in 1992, Peyton Manning (football) in 1993, Lizzie Fitzgerald (volleyball) in 1994. In all, Newman has won 71 state championships and one national championship.

The Sailing National Championship - 1984 - was led by two-time Olympian John Lovell and his brother Andy Lovell who was a qualifier for the Olympics but did not sail.
