[FULL STORY]

The Dalai Lama is generally esteemed as a notable, global humanitarian. But who does the Dalai Lama consider a notable humanitarian? Newman’s Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Scott Kellerman ’63. For dedicating more than a decade of his life to humanitarian work with the Batwa people of Uganda, Dr. Kellermann was honored by the Dalai Lama, along with 50 other compassionate individuals, at a special reception in San Francisco this February.

The honorees were lauded for their work in more than 18 countries around the world. The award is meant to recognize those who dedicate their lives to compassion without expectation of reward. The diverse group of honorees dedicated their time to helping others in a wide range of countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Peru, Sudan, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, United States of America, and Zambia.

Kellermann was honored for his decade of work as a medical missionary in Uganda. Recognizing a need for medical services in Third World countries, Dr. Kellermann volunteered in places like Nepal and Central America throughout his medical career. After selling his successful medical practice in Nevada City, California in 2000, Dr. Kellermann moved with his wife, Carol, to Uganda. Once in Uganda, he began treating the indigenous peoples of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest who had lost their homes after being expelled by military force. These Batwa “pygmy” tribes were in dire need of medical services. Dr. Kellermann later opened the Bwindi Community Health Center which now treats more than 35,000 patients a year. His clinic provides a wide array of services to the local people, and his 80-person staff combines the experience of traditional healers and medical professionals.

Please join us – and the Dalai Lama – in congratulating Dr. Kellermann for his dedication, compassion, and contribution to humanity.
