[FULL STORY]

This week marks the beginning of spring, known locally as “summer” or just “hot.” Our athletes are hydrating to beat the heat – and practicing to beat the competition. Keep up with your baseball, softball, track, golf, and tennis scores and stats by reading the coaches updates in this week’s Monday Sports Wrap.

Sports Updates

Golf

The Newman boys golf team played its first match of the year today, Wednesday, March 14 and defeated Country Day 169 to 170. Low score wins, fewer strokes.

Low scorers for Newman were:
Peter Moss: 39
Robert Poche: 42
Joe Maruri: 43
Russell Gardner: 45

The girls golf team played a practice match versus Sacred Heart and Ben Franklin. No official scores were kept. Participating for Newman were Caroline Johnson, Shelby Pointer, and Adair Butler.

Softball

The girls softball team had a tough week last week, losing to Lusher and Trinity. The team logged some time in the “Hack Shack” on Thursday for practice. The girls loved it! This week the team has two games: Tuesday, March 20 against Ursuline and Wednesday, March 21 against McGehee.

Baseball

The varsity baseball team started the week 8-3 on the season, and went on the road again to play in the annual Terrebonne Parish Tournament (hosted by H.L. Bourgeois High School). Out of the first eleven games, the team has only played two in the New Orleans area.

On Thursday, the Greenies defeated 5A East St. John 6-3 in the first game of a double header, and followed that with a 4-1 victory over 5A Terrebonne.

The boys returned to Houma on Saturday for a double header, and started the day with an 11-0 solid win over 3A St. James. In game two, the boys overcame a five-hour delay and some key injuries to defeat 5A H.L. Bourgeois 6-3, sweeping the Tournament.

The Greenies continue their march to the district opener on March 27 against Thomas Jefferson, 4:00 p.m. at Mel Ott Stadium by traveling to Hannan on March 22, and then taking on Belle Chasse on March 24.

The Greenies begin this week ranked #2 in the state, very close behind perennial power Evangel.

The middle school baseball team had a tough start, losing the opener 9-0 to Christian Brothers on Friday. The boys will double down their effort as they play against Holy Cross, John Curtis, and Brother Martin this week.

Track and Field

This past Friday, the girls track team competed in the Judy Baehr Relays at St. Scholastica High School. The team came home with a second place finish out of 17 teams.

Leading the way for the team with individual victories were Camille Barnett in the 800 meters (setting a new school record) and Jamie Hawkins in the triple jump. Others scoring points at the meet were as follows: Haley Johnson placed 4th in the 3200 meter run (setting a new school record). Hannah Kalozdi placed 3rd and Katherine Woolridge 5th in the 1600 meter run. Lynne Sneed placed 3rd in the 400, while Avery Rowan placed 3rd in the high jump and 300 meter hurdles. Caroline Johnson was 3rd and Bizzy Margolin 5th in the pole vault. Jamie Hawkins placed 3rd in the long jump, while Jada Hawkins got 3rd in the triple jump. Kayla Pleasant placed 4th in the discus and the 4x200 relay team of Camille Barnett, Lynne Sneed, Jada Hawkins and Jamie Hawkins finished 2nd.

The boys also competed at the event, and individually the team had sixteen seasonal best efforts, of which eleven were also career personal best records.

Even though they came in 6th and 8th place respectively, Gordon Cole and Michael Downing ran career personal record times in the 3200 meter run. James White and Justin Harrell’s third-place finishes in the 200 and 400 meter dashes were also career personal records for them. Even though they weren’t seasonal or career personal records, Phillip Stephens and Justin Harrell took first place in the shot put and the high jump, respectively. As a team, the boys finished 4th out of thirteen teams with a total of 57 points.

The boys’ and girls’ next meet is the Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic this Friday and Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium and the adjacent track and field complex in City Park. Teams from all over the South are entered. The meet begins at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and resumes at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The middle school track team opened its outdoor season this past weekend at the Trafton Academy Eagle Invitational. The event had 726 athletes competing, representing 28 different schools. Newman had the opportunity to get almost all 35 athletes involved, because the team was able to complete in two different divisions; the middle division was comprised of athletes in the 5th and 6th grades, while the junior high division was 7th and 8th graders.
