Speech and Debate at U.C. Berkeley
Newman Speech and Debate returned from the Cal Invitational Tournament at U.C. Berkeley last weekend with some impressive results. The team of Luke Estrada ’22 and Elly Patron ’22 were the Tournament Champions in Junior Varsity Policy Debate (for students in their first or second year of debate). In this very competitive field, they did not lose a single round all the way through finals. Luke was 2nd overall speaker and Elly 7th out of 120 individuals in the event. Other highlights include…
- Serena Klebba ’21 made it to Octafinals in Extemporaneous Speaking and placed 4th overall in Impromptu Speaking, out of a field of 150 students.
- The team of Griffin Descant ’20 and Andrew Herman ’21 made it to the Triple Octafinal Round and placed 48th overall in a very competitive field.
- Jackson Haber ’20 won 4 of 6 preliminary debates (barely missing clearing to elimination rounds).
These debaters represented Newman exceptionally among a nationally competitive field of schools. Go Greenies!
