Upper School Celebrates Move-Up Day 2020

On the last official day of school during the Continuity of Learning Plan, the Upper School student body celebrated the traditional Move-Up Day Ceremony this afternoon via Zoom conference. Despite the non-traditional format, there was much to celebrate as we marked this important moment for the Upper School.

The Move-Up Day Ceremony is when each class advances to the area of the Henson Auditorium that will be their assigned seating section at assemblies and performances for the coming school year. For today’s virtual Move-Up Day Ceremony, Interim Upper School Head Robyn McCormick asked students to visualize moving to their new section, and to look forward to a time when we all can be together again on campus. Mrs. McCormick specifically acknowledged both the seniors, whose journey as Newman students is drawing to a close, and the eighth graders, who attended today’s assembly as the newest members of the Upper School.

Later in the ceremony, 2020 Class Dean Andrew Bond presented senior Nicholas Provosty ‘20 (pictured) with the Heather M. Pereira Memorial Award for optimism and enthusiasm and senior Jarmone Sutherland ‘20 (pictured) with the Daniel Frederick Anepohl Award for most esteemed member of the class; Executive Committee Chair Margot Roussel ‘20 then issued the oath of office to next year’s chair, Max Jacobson ’21.

Later, Provosty announced the senior class gift, the establishment of a fund for teacher enrichment. He spoke eloquently of his and his class’s gratitude to the wonderful teachers and coaches of the Upper School who give selflessly of their time and talents to support their development.

Senior members of the yearbook staff then announced the dedication of their yearbook to Interim Upper School Head Robyn McCormick, whose efforts this year in leading the Upper School, particularly in the last several weeks of distance learning, have been remarkable. In announcing the dedication, yearbook editors Marley Aamodt ’20 and Adair Rufty ’20 shared a special video composed of thank-you messages for Mrs. McCormick from nearly every member of the Class of 2020.

In past years the Move-Up Day Ceremony has been followed by a special luncheon for seniors in the Krohn Foyer and the much-anticipated countdown to the final bell at 3:10 p.m. on Michael Lupin Field. Sadly, because of the current Covid-19 crisis, the countdown has been postponed. We look forward to honoring the seniors (virtually) on Tuesday, May 26 at Awards Night, on Wednesday, May 27 with the Celebration of the Class of 2020 program, and later at a rescheduled Commencement.
