Newman Debaters Have Strong Showing at New York City Invitational

Newman debate coach Greg Malis provided the following update from the most recent speech and debate tournament in New York City.

On October 13-15, Newman competed at the New York City Invitational, hosted by the Bronx High School of Science in Bronx, NY. One-hundred fifty schools from 30 states were represented in at least one event. We enjoyed the following results:

  • Laura Arenas placed 9th out of nearly 70 competitors in Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Royden Lynch and Rajan Agrawal placed 5th out of nearly 90 teams in Policy Debate
  • Max Kanner was named the 18th best individual speaker out of nearly 200 Lincoln Douglas debaters
  • Rajan was named the 15th best individual speaker out of nearly 180 Policy debaters
  • Royden was named the 8th best individual speaker in Policy Debate

Additionally, two members of the team have earned unique honors from the National Speech and Debate Association:

  • Max Kanner has enough points in his career to be awarded the Degree of Premier Distinction. It is the highest level for a student to earn.
  • Coach Alma Nicholson has enough points and years of service to be awarded the Second Diamond Award. She will receive her plaque at the National Tournament in June 2018
  • Congratulations to Max and Ms. Nicholson for their long years of success in speech and debate
