Newman Policy Team Qualifies for National Championship

This past weekend, members of the Newman Speech and Debate team traveled to the Boston area for a tournament at Lexington High School in Lexington, Massachusetts. Out of over 130 debaters from the U.S., Royden Lynch ’18 was named the 20th best individual speaker, and Rajan Agrawal ’18 was the 13th.

More importantly, as a team, Rajan and Royden placed 5th, losing a tough round to an outstanding team from Stuyvesant High School in New York.

A fifth place finish is good enough to earn a "leg" towards qualifying for the National Tournament of Champions (TOC). Since this is their second leg, they are now fully qualified for the TOC, and they will be competing against the best of the best at the University of Kentucky on April 28-30.

Although Newman has qualified for the TOC in other events in recent past, this is the first time since 2002 that a Newman policy team has achieved this goal.

We are excited to be returning to Lexington, Kentucky in Policy Debate. Congratulations to Rajan and Royden!
