The Newman chess team(Jai Bansal, Sachin Dasa, Anjali Dasa, Sophia Lazar, John Samii, Nina Karp, and Nathan Xiang) has been competing in the Louisiana Scholastic Chess League's City League Tournament. Beginning in January, the Newman Knights played through eight qualification rounds to finish 3rd out of eight qualifying teams and advanced to the elimination rounds.
On March 3, they competed in the Final 8 elimination rounds and defeated their opponent to advance to the Final 4 Championship round. Improving upon their previous two-years’ experience in which they made it to the Final 4 and placed 4th both years, the Newman team made a significant improvement, beating their opponent in the match to advance and earn the right to compete for 1st place. The final match for 1st place was very competitive, but Newman fell to a very strong Airline Park Academy team, and placed 2nd.
Congratulations to all the Newman players who have been working on their chess game so diligently over the last several years, and best of luck to those who will be attending the State Scholastic Championship in Baton Rouge on April 21!
