Green Trees Welcomes Lambeth House Residents

For the past several years, the entire Newman community from Green Trees through the Upper School has recognized our history and remembered our founder, Isidore Newman, in a special way in the days and weeks surrounding Founder’s Day in March. In 1903, Mr. Newman founded our School to educate children living at the Jewish Orphans’ Home on St. Charles Avenue. This year, Green Trees continued his spirit of community outreach and engagement in two special ways: a special morning with residents of Lambeth House, and a new composting initiative to support sustainability.

On Tuesday, March 13, Green Trees invited guests from Lambeth House to enjoy a special even called Meeting of the Minds. For this event, independent residents from Lambeth House visited Newman and partnered with a small group of children from Green Trees for a morning of movement, music, and refreshments. Their time together was full of laughter and joy as the elders and toddlers talked, sang, and played together. After the activity, Greenies and guests potted plants, which guests took home to commemorate the time shared together.

Green Trees students are also beginning a new adventure in composting. As you might imagine, there are often fruit and veggie scraps leftover after snack time. Now our youngest Greenies will have the opportunity to put those scraps to use and create a more sustainable environment. Leftover fruit and veggie scraps will be placed in our new compost bin, and over the next few months, they will break down into potable soil for our future garden. This time next year, we can send our special guests home with plants that were grown in our very own compost-enriched soil!
