Students Win Prizes at Environmental Awareness Art and Language Arts Contest
R. Hibbert
Several Newman students won prizes in Louisiana’s 16th Environmental Awareness Student Art & Language Arts Contest.
The contest theme was “Green STEM Careers.” Students were asked to submit visual art or written work showing what a career in STEM might look like. Judges review the work in four age groups: 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14-18. Winners of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age group are awarded a cash prize and will be included on a 2019 calendar produced by the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission.
For their artwork, Katie Gershanik ’26 and Tosia Sobera ’26 won first and second place in the Ages 8-10 division. For their writing, Deacon Maxwell ’26, Sydney Able ’26, and Morgan Breaux ’26 won first, second, and third place in the Ages 8-10 division.
Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser presented the students with their awards and cash prizes at a special reception Tuesday in the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge. Please join us in congratulating our students. To view the complete list of winners or to request a calendar, visit the Environmental Education Commission website, at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/artcontest.
