Newman Celebrates Homecoming 2018

Today Newman recognized the members of the 2018 Homecoming Court in a ceremony for the Upper School. Homecoming Queen Laine Nowak joined Homecoming King John French and the other members of the Court on stage to be presented to their peers, and to hear remarks by Darryl Berger ’65.

Berger, Founder and Chairman of the Berger Company, is one of Newman’s most spirited and engaged alumni. In his remarks, he shared examples of what has changed about the Newman experience since his days as a student: among other differences, the Henson Auditorium and the Lemle Building had only recently been built, and Saratoga Street ran through the middle of campus. But, Berger stressed, the fundamentals of Newman – including motivated students, dedicated teachers, and exceptional academics, athletics, and arts programs – are still central to our school’s identity.

Following the presentation and remarks, the Homecoming Court recessed and joined their parents, families, friends, and teachers in the Reynolds Ryan Gallery for a special reception. Later that afternoon, the entire school participated in a second line parade to celebrate Homecoming and the reopening of Jefferson Avenue. (To view a slideshow from this event, click here. Homecoming culminates in tonight’s varsity football game against Thomas Jefferson, where the court will be presented at halftime. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. on Michael Lupin Field, and all members of the Newman community are invited to attend. Prior to the game there is a special reception for alumni which includes a tour of the new Science and Technology Building.

Joining Nowak and French, members of the 2018 Homecoming Court are Eli Abramson, Tabor Brewster, Murray Calhoun, Kerrie Finegan, Elizabeth Finkelstein, Emma Freeman, Jack Gentry, Sydney Gold, Andrew Gottsegen, Garrett McNamara, Mason Mentz, Claire Morrison, Keil Moss, Edmund Philipson, Emmy Pilant, Brie Rive, Preston Schnell, and Audrey Singer.
