Greenies Go for the Gold: Spring Sports Wrap

It has been an exciting spring in Newman sports; help us congratulate our athletes for a job well done. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Spring Sports Awards Assembly on Wednesday, May 12, at 3:00 p.m. in the Henson Auditorium. Here’s the rundown of our extraordinary athletes’ accomplishments:

Track

Boys: Four of our boys qualified to the State 2-A Track and Field Championship Meet at L.S.U. in Baton Rouge on Thursday, May 6. Ronnie Vinson qualified in the high jump placing 2nd overall with a jump of 6’6”, a career personal record for Ronnie. James Rigney qualified in the pole vault, and he placed 5th overall with a jump of 11’0”. Justin Harrell, an 8th grader, also qualified in the high jump and placed 6th overall with a jump of 6’2”. Finally, Odell Beckham qualified in both the long jump and the 200 meter dash. In the long jump, Odell placed 6th overall with a jump of 21’10 1’2”; and in the 200 meter dash, Odell also placed 6th with a time of 22.31. As a team, the Newman Boys’ Varsity placed 14th overall with a total score of 13 points.

Girls: The girls were also tearing up the track at the State meet, finishing the year as the class 2A state runner up. Lily Miller won 1st place in the 100, 200, and 400. Jasmine Kudji placed 2nd in the 100 hurdles and 3rd in the long jump. Camille Barnett finished 3rd in the 800 and was on the 5th place 4 x 400 relay team along with Hannah Kalozdi, Jada Hawkins and Tiffany Wilson. Tiffany also finished 6th in the 400, and Maitland Frilot was 5th in the pole vault.

Baseball

Barreling into the playoffs, it looked like Newman was going to take on all comers. The team made mincemeat of most of its opponents and advanced to the 2nd round of playoffs, but a loss to Riverside ended a successful season.

Golf

The golf team finished 7th in the state. Sophomore Peter Moss, was the top player for Newman and finished in 19th place with a thirty-six-hole score of 166. Newman’s golf team placed 2nd in regionals to advance to the state championship. The team included senior Trevor Thompson, juniors Spencer Roy and Brooks Weaver, and sophomore Braden Weaver.

Tennis

Sophomore Robert Eckstein, who won the Men’s Singles for our region, advanced to the semifinal match in state where he lost to last year’s state champion. Robert placed 3rd in the state in Men’s singles for Division II. Seniors Jonathan Fisher and Merritt Talbot, who won the Men’s Doubles at the regional tennis tournament, reached the semi finals but lost in a close match.

Sophomore Winnie Yeates reached the quarter finals and narrowly lost in the 3rd set. Seniors Tara Reza and Lindsay Stall, regionals doubles winners, reached the quarter finals at the state tournament, as well.
