Breakthrough New Orleans

T.J. Locke
This summer, more than 100 middle school students from New Orleans area schools and 32 high school and college student teachers participated in Breakthrough New Orleans’ (BTNOLA) Summer Academy at Isidore Newman School. We recently changed our name from Summerbridge New Orleans to Breakthrough New Orleans to better reflect the year-round nature of the program and provide the added benefits of association with the national Breakthrough Collaborative brand. The name may have changed, but we continue to provide the same tuition-free, summer- and school-year college-preparatory program for academically motivated students from under-resourced schools and a teacher training program for talented college and high-school students. Students received academic enrichment in the areas of English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. They also focused on the five core values of the program which are: scholarship, integrity, resolve, advocacy, and compassion, in addition to participating in activities to reinforce those values such as Career Day, College Tours, and Academic Olympics. The students also sponsored a Canned Food Drive in the community and donated over 1,500 cans to Second Harvesters Food Bank. 44% of the summer teaching staff were either current Newman students or alums. We are looking forward to kicking off our school year component on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 with our School-after-School program, which will provide tutoring support to our Breakthrough students.
