Visual Arts

Our Visual Arts program begins in Green Trees with foundational exploration in studio art. Through guided exploration art is ingrained in our student’s purpose as young people at Newman. In LS students continue their studio arts practice exploring the elements and principles of art and they begin to branch out into the New Orleans Arts community with visits in 1st and 2nd grade to the New Orleans Museum of Art. In Middle School through the Middle School Arts Rotation students are given the choice to continue their studio art study in semester long arts classes that give students freedom to explore and also survey different artistic media. In Upper School Visual Arts students complete their art training at Newman through an array of courses in traditional studio art and new media arts.

Throughout their entire time at Newman students will engage in visits to local arts institutions, they will work and exhibit with local, national and world class artists such as Nicole Charbonnet and Marc Chagall in our Reynolds Ryan Gallery and they will each be given an introduction to the depth and breadth of art history before high school graduation.

Reynolds Ryan Art Gallery

Made possible through a gift from the Reynolds and Ryan families the art gallery has become a central hub at Newman for events far beyond just the arts. Four to five major exhibitions take place in the gallery each year. Past exhibitions have showcased work from renowned institutions such as NOMA, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the Tulane Museum of Art, as well as a selection of nationally celebrated artists. Student collaboration is a standard in this beautiful space.
