Performing Arts

Our Performing Arts program begins in Green Trees with an introduction to dance, music, and movement. Exploration continues through to 4th and 5th grade ,when students choose to participate in the Movement and Theater programs. In Middle School, students have the opportunity to choose the Middle School Arts Rotation, which offers courses in dance and acting as well as Media Arts and Studio Arts. In Upper School students have the opportunity to study more advanced techniques in acting, dance, music, and technical theater, and have the option to participate in fully-mounted dramatic and musical productions in the fall and spring.

The Drama and Theater Program at Newman offers acting classes in grades 4 through 12 and technical theater classes in grades 9 through 12. The Newman Players each year produce a fall and spring play or musical, and the Middle School produces a winter musical. Past productions have included The Laramie Project, Hairspray, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Little Shop of Horrors, The Lion King, and Grease.

The Dance and Movement Program at Newman emphasizes self-discovery, exploring movement, and collaboration with others, as well as creative development, artistic expression, and physical strengthening. The program encourages an overall experience of healthful living. As students develop their craft in class and after school during performances, they build a vocabulary and skills that they can pull from to choreograph their own work in the Upper School.
