We challenge our students to develop independence, agency, and leadership skills that will allow them to engage with and transform their world."

Bridget Hagan, Head of Lower School

Learning is an experience, everything else is just information. - Albert Einstein

In Newman’s Lower School, we embrace our School Motto, Discimus Agere Agendo – “We learn to do by doing." Our dedicated and talented faculty work tirelessly to create robust learning opportunities for our students to explore their world in physically and intellectually safe environments in which diverse perspectives are respected and celebrated. The energy in classrooms is palpable as students are engaged with their peers and teachers in the learning process. The building of strong relationships is a pillar of the Lower School and these deep connections help foster community and collaboration.

At Newman, Lower School students develop tools for lifelong learning. Individual growth and development are fostered through educational best practices that aim to meet the needs of the whole child while attending to their social and emotional development as well as their academic growth. Our students grow and develop through the strong programs that are a mainstay of the Lower School. Our literacy program develops confident and accomplished readers and writers through a blend of research-based foundational skills, including intentional phonics instruction and engagement with rich literature. Our math program is rooted in the highly effective Singapore Math approach, which challenges our students to develop essential skills and deep mathematical understanding. Students also participate in co-curricular offerings including World Languages, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education, Science, Coding, and Design Thinking.

In the Lower School our goal is to instill in our students not only a love for learning, but also a concerned consciousness for social justice and responsible citizenship. We challenge our students to develop independence, agency, and leadership skills that will allow them to engage with and transform their world. Our students strive for academic excellence, build strong relationships, show kindness and respect for others, and develop responsibility and compassion throughout their Lower School experience.

The Lower School journey is designed to develop the whole child. We encourage you to learn more about our School, and we look forward to getting to know you and your family.

Best,
