Athletics

Welcome

Dear Newman Parents,

For many, many years, Newman Athletics has played an important role in the lives of our students, faculty, parents, and alumni. As a former student-athlete, coach, and now as the Athletic Director, I strongly believe in the profound impact athletics can play in the lives of our student-athletes. With each and every season come valuable lessons in hard work, commitment, teamwork, and learning how to persevere through adversity. Our sports programs offer our student-athletes a unique opportunity to continue their learning outside of the classroom, and this experience helps drive our coaches and the entire Athletic Department.

In 2021-22, Newman had over 350 student-athletes working hard and competing for their school. In the Upper School, we fielded 23 athletic programs which comprised 30 Upper School teams. At the Middle School level, we fielded over 31 teams within 16 programs. These student-athletes and teams were led by an incredibly talented, committed, and passionate community of coaches. With over 100 coaching slots filled by both full-time and part-time coaches, we are extremely grateful to have such a devoted group of professionals who are also fully aligned with the mission of our School.

In any given year, we will have over 85% of our student body in grades six through twelve participating in at least one sport at Newman. Through the years, this type of participation, dedication, and commitment to excellence has produced 108 State Championships, including last year’s repeat for the Girls Tennis team and State Championships for Boys Basketball and Boys Soccer. Many varsity programs had top finishes including Girls Cross Country, Football, Girls Basketball, and Lacrosse. Along with the great overall team success last year, Newman athletes were recognized and honored for their individual achievements with countless student-athletes named to the All-District, All-Metro, All-Region and All-State teams. It is also important to recognize that of the 36 underclassmen awards given for scholarship, character, and academic excellence at the spring Upper School Awards Assembly, 25 of those awards were presented to student-athletes.

Our facilities continue to provide tremendous experiences for all of our student-athletes, parents, fans, and the greater Newman and New Orleans community. The Manning Family Athletic Complex which includes a practice field, a new professionally turfed field (Kolb Field), the Whitney Concessions Stand, the Berger Family Sky Deck that provides a phenomenal vantage point to view games, and a new Press Box and filming area. The signature space of the new project is Reginelli Way, an entrance to the complex, which honors legendary football coach Tony Reginelli. Across the field, our student-athletes can stay in peak condition using the newly renovated Berger Family Fitness Center.

Our most recent project, a full renovation to the Tuohy Gym, including the new Fieldhouse, will transform how our student-athletes practice and compete in the Tuohy Gym as well as prepare for practices and games. The new Fieldhouse will also provide a number of state-of-the-art meeting rooms for student-athletes and coaches to gather, watch film, and strategize. All of these will provide competitive advantages to our athletes and teams. This new addition further enhances an already robust facility offering for Newman Athletics. Newman’s rich history of competitive sports has set high expectations for our student-athletes and coaches. These high expectations motivate our student-athletes and coaches to strive to make their programs the very best they can be. Throughout this process, our student-athletes are presented with valuable life experiences in an inclusive environment where they have the opportunity to develop strong relationships with their teammates and their coaches. Ultimately, Newman Athletics allows our student-athletes to have a more well-rounded Newman experience.

Athletics at Newman are very special, and we in the Athletic Department appreciate you being ALL N.

Respectfully,

Patrick Summerour ’95
Athletic Director
