Athletics

Welcome

Dear Newman Parents,

For many years, Newman Athletics has played an important role in the lives of our students, faculty, parents, and alumni. As a former student-athlete, coach, and now as the Athletic Director, I strongly believe in the profound impact athletics can play in the lives of our student-athletes. With each season comes valuable lessons in hard work, commitment, teamwork, and learning how to persevere through adversity. Newman's sports programs offer student-athletes a unique opportunity to continue their learning outside of the classroom. This mission aligned interscholastic athletic experience helps drive our coaches and the entire Athletic Department to be their very best.

In 2023-24, Newman had over 350 student-athletes working hard and competing for their school. In the Upper School, we fielded 23 athletic programs which comprised 31 Upper School teams. At the Middle School level, we fielded over 31 teams within 16 programs. These student-athletes and teams were led by an incredibly talented, committed, and passionate community of coaches. With over 90 coaching slots filled by both full-time and part-time coaches, we are extremely grateful to have such a devoted group of professionals who are also fully aligned with the mission of our School.

In any given year, we will have over 85% of our student body in grades six through twelve participating in at least one sport at Newman. Through the years, this type of participation, dedication, and commitment to excellence has produced 114 State Championships, including last year's state championship in Girls Soccer and Boys Basketball. Many varsity programs had top finishes including Girls Cross Country & Track, Boys Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis, Boys Golf and Lacrosse. Along with the great overall team success last year, Newman athletes were recognized and honored for their individual achievements with countless student-athletes named to the All-District, All-Metro, All-Region and All-State teams. It is also important to recognize that several of our senior student athletes were named to the LHSAA Academic All State Team and 12 student athletes will be competing at the collegiate level next year.

Our facilities continue to provide tremendous experiences for all of our student-athletes, parents, fans, and the greater Newman and New Orleans community. The Manning Family Athletic Complex which includes a practice field, a professionally turfed field (Kolb Field), the Whitney Concessions Stand, the Berger Family Sky Deck that provides a phenomenal vantage point to view games, and a new Press Box and filming area. The signature space of the project is Reginelli Way, an entrance to the complex, which honors legendary football coach Tony Reginelli. Across the field, our student-athletes can stay in peak condition using the Berger Family Fitness Center and our High Performance Program.

Our most recent project, a full renovation to the Tuohy Gym, including the new Fieldhouse, transforms how our student-athletes practice and compete in the Tuohy Gym as well as prepare for practices and games. The new Fieldhouse provides several state-of-the-art meeting rooms for student-athletes and coaches to gather, watch film, and strategize. All of these provide competitive advantages for our athletes and teams. These new additions further enhance an already robust facility offering for Newman Athletics. To learn more about improvements, click here. There is no question these spaces are a tremendous addition to our stellar athletic facilities.

Newman’s rich history of competitive sports has set high expectations for our student-athletes and coaches. These high expectations motivate our student-athletes and coaches to strive to make their programs the very best they can be. Throughout this process, our student-athletes are presented with valuable life experiences in an inclusive environment where they can develop strong relationships with their teammates and their coaches. Ultimately, Newman Athletics allows our student-athletes to have a more well-rounded Newman experience.

Athletics at Newman are very special, and we in the Athletic Department appreciate you being ALL N.

Respectfully,

Patrick Summerour ’95
Athletic Director
