One of the first schools in the city to have a full-time registered nurse on staff, and one of the first high schools to have a Certified Athletic Trainer, Newman is fortunate to have not only excellent personnel but also the well-equipped Philipson Health Center. The Philipson Health Center was renovated in 2003 thanks to a generous gift by Alan and Arlene Philipson to honor the memories of their children Andre (Class of 1988) and Eric (Class of 1990). Through their generosity the Philipsons have made a bequest to permanently endow its operations so that the Health Center will be able to serve all children in Green Trees, Lower, Middle, and Upper School.
A registered nurse is on duty from 7:45 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Her primary responsibilities include daily assessment and treatment of injuries and illness; identifying school children’s needs and communicating that information to parents, administrators, and teachers; implementation of individual health care plans for children with chronic health conditions, and the documentation and maintenance of student medical records.
Certified Athletic Trainers are medical professionals trained in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health care profession, and the AMA recommends Certified Athletic Trainers in every high school to keep America’s youth safe and healthy.
Specifically, the ATC specializes in six practice areas or domains: Injury/Illness Prevention and Wellness Protection, Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis, Immediate and Emergency Care, Treatment and Rehabilitation, and Organizational and Professional Health and Well-being.
The Certified Athletic Trainers are on duty throughout the school day in order to care for the student athletes. They also attend practices and home and away games throughout the school year.
