Libraries

The goal of the Lower School Library is to enhance the total instructional program of the Lower School. The librarian strives to encourage life-long reading and writing habits and to instill an appreciation of literature among the children by assisting them in choosing quality books. Students experience a variety of literature- and library-based activities that support their classroom learning and that also promote appreciation for diversity and global understanding. In weekly library class, students strengthen computer skills including using the online library catalog and researching on the web and on subscription databases.

The library's collection includes more than 50,000 books, plus an extensive collection of DVDs and audiobooks. In addition, the library subscribes to a number of databases including ARTstor, Jstor, Proquest Historical Newspapers, Ebsco databases, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

The Popp Library's collection can be searched through an online catalog. A complete list of subscription databases and associated passwords can be found by logging onto the Newman website and clicking on Resources > Library Resources.

Hours of Operation:

• Weekdays, 7:45 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
• The library closes at 3:00 p.m. in the summer months

Borrowing Policy:

• There are no check out limits.
• A book is circulated for a period of 10 school days.
• Books may be renewed unless someone else has requested a title while it is on loan.
• Books do not need to be brought to the library for renewal, however, students must ask a librarian to renew borrowed books.
• As soon as a book is believed to be lost, it should be reported to a librarian.

Fines:

• Overdue books are assessed a fine of 10¢ per school day.
• There is a five-day grace period where no fees are assessed, however on the sixth day a book is late, the fine due is 60¢.
• If a book is lost, the fine equals its replacement value. If the book should be found at some later point in the year, no fine will be assessed.
