Community and Inclusion

Office of Community and Inclusion

The Office of Community and Inclusion supports Newman’s mission of being “an inclusive community committed to strong relationships and high expectations” through two pillars: Community Engagement and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The office is dedicated to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where every individual feels valued and empowered to be their authentic self. Through community engagement, service, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programming, the office aims to strengthen connections, increase empathy and understanding, celebrate diverse perspectives, and cultivate deep listening, meaningful dialogue, and respectful civil discourse across the school community and beyond.

Board Position on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Consistent with ISAS standards, the Board of Governors seeks to ensure that Newman fosters an environment of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at school and among the Newman community. Our School continues to be unequivocal in actively opposing racism in all forms. An important aspect of the Newman experience is based on building relationships across a diverse group of people. These relationships provide the trust to engage in difficult and complex conversations and lead to a better understanding of different perspectives and allow us to embrace the humanity in one another.

Our Commitment to Community and Inclusion

Creating and supporting a culture of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a priority for us at Newman. Our School’s commitment to strong relationships and high expectations are essential as we work to be a truly inclusive institution where all students and families know and feel they belong.

Definitions

Diversity is defined as the wide range of characteristics that contribute to a person’s identity including, but not limited to, ethnicity, race, gender, religion, age, ability, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background.

Equity is defined as fair treatment and processes that ensure equal access to opportunity. As a function of fairness, equity ensures that people have what they need to participate in school life and realize their potential.
