We challenge our students to be contributors to the Newman and greater communities, to develop themselves as life-long learners and leaders, and to learn to work outside their comfort zones.
The Middle School at Newman is a dynamic community of teachers and learners focused on meeting the needs of individual students in order to help them to become their best. We challenge our students to be contributors here at Newman and to greater communities, to develop themselves as life-long learners, and to learn to take on challenges. This takes place in an environment where each student is appreciated as an individual and supported by faculty members who understand well this developmental stage in the life of a child.
Our rigorous curriculum and commitment to differentiated instruction allow us to challenge and support students, providing them with real and varied opportunities for growth in academics, the arts, and extra-curricular activities such as speech and debate and chess. The 85% participation rate of our Middle School students in athletics is a testament to their openness to new experiences and their immersion in the leadership and collaborative opportunities that team sports present.
In advisory, we employ a balance of group and individual advising. Our robust advisory program, which matches a group of 10-12 students with an adult for three years, aids in forging new relationships, developing student self-advocacy, and building and strengthening community. Advisories develop positive group dynamics through a combination of group games and discussions. Advisors also work individually with students throughout the year to set personal goals, overcome challenges, and celebrate successes.
Advisory is complemented well by the Middle School Enrichment program, which integrates academic support and social-emotional learning into the course of the school day, delivered and facilitated by our own members of the Student Support team, the administrative team, and Middle School faculty members.
The dynamism of the Newman Middle School shows in the emphasis on project-based learning, the varied academic and outdoor education trips, and the service-learning opportunities. In the Newman Middle School, students truly do “learn to do by doing.”
