[FULL STORY]
During a special ceremony at the 29th Annual Newman Invitational Track Meet at West Jefferson's Hoss Memtsas Stadium, Newman honored its beloved Coach Keefe Hecker. Among students, faculty, family, and friends, Coach Mark Faliveno announced that from this point on, the meet will now be named the J. Keefe Hecker Newman Invitational Track and Field Meet.
Track and field athletes, student fans, coaches, parents, and the Hecker family were all in attendance at this special event. Visiting teams from Belle Chasse, Cabrini, Chalmette, Country Day, Fisher, Lusher, St. Stanislaus, and De La Salle participated in the meet. Groups of athletes spread out around the stadium, competing in the various field and track events as the sun settled behind the bleachers.
Between the events, Coach Mark Faliveno called for Newman athletes to assemble for a special ceremony. It was also Senior Night, when the team recognizes its seniors for their final year as members. Each senior’s name was called, and each received a frame with photos of some of their career’s highlights. This year’s honorees were Ashley Adams, Camille Barnett, Chris Chin, Michael Downing, Allen Kuhn, Bizzy Margolin, Tristan Pluta, and Tiffany Wilson.
At the end of the ceremony, Coach Faliveno had a surprise. As the seniors unfurled a large banner, Faliveno paid tribute to Coach Keefe Hecker, who has served as Head Coach of the boys varsity track and field team since 1990. In honor of his dedication to the sport and to his athletes, the meet would now be called the J. Keefe Hecker Newman Invitational Track and Field Meet. Hecker, who is known for his unassuming nature and humility, was taken aback, and he thanked the assembled crowd, which also included members of his family.
The event program included a letter from Upper School Head Nowell Hesse, who said this of Coach Hecker:
Coach Hecker has been a fixture at Newman for the last thirty-seven years and has served as the head boy’s track and field coach for the last twenty-three. Along the way, he has impacted the lives of countless young men as they aspired for greatness. Coach Hecker’s straightforward approach and unwavering dedication to his athletes and the Newman Track and Field Team are just part of the reason why he is revered by those who have passed through his program. He seems to know just how hard to push each member of the team in just the right way to help them achieve their goals.
While his athletes and teams have won district, regional, and state championships, as well as numerous individual awards, the true measure of his success cannot be determined by counting ribbons or trophies or championship banners. Perhaps more than anything else, it is Coach Hecker’s kindness and the strength of his character that have had the greatest impact throughout his career. He leads by example in all that he does, and he never quits. Those who have worked with Coach Hecker over the years are better coaches, teachers, and mentors as a result, and those who have run, or thrown, or jumped for him are better people because of the time they have spent with him.
Coach Hecker will be retiring at the end of this school year, but he has affected a generation of students and is admired by the scores of educators that have worked alongside him. He is truly an institution at the School. Such an important member of the Newman community does not need an event named after him to be remembered, but it is hard to think of a more fitting honor. A man so universally respected and venerated will surely be missed.
