A Comprehensive Renovation of Physical Education & Athletic Locker Rooms and Community Spaces

Inspiring competition and spirit have always been part of the fabric of Isidore Newman School. Lessons from the playing field shape character – the ability to compete, appreciate winning, learn from losses, show respect for opponents, and keep trying whenever a task is difficult. As legendary Newman coach and teacher Billy Fitzgerald once said, athletics are where ‘values are caught, not taught.’

Newman’s storied athletic history belies our small size and uncompromising academic standards. Our over 105 state championships inspire today’s students to dream big.

Project Overview

Athletics touch the lives of every Newman student – more than 85% of Middle and Upper School students participate in at least one sport, and our community loves to gather and cheer at games, meets, and matches.

This comprehensive renovation of Physical Education, Locker Rooms, and Community Spaces will provide amenities appropriate to the stature of the Newman athletics program and the spirit of our community.

The Fieldhouse

In 1951, Isidore Newman School was experiencing an increase in class sizes, resulting in the exponential growth of varsity sports teams. As a result, the Tuohy Gymnasium Annex was constructed as a "temporary" solution to address the need for more physical education and locker room spaces.

When the Annex was constructed, Newman's average Upper School class had fewer than 65 students and a typical varsity football team had around 30 players and 1 coach. Today, the average class has roughly 100 students, and the varsity team can include over 80 players, along with several coaches and trainers. Continuing the tradition of ensuring the School has spaces which accommodate for the size and scope of our programs, the Fieldhouse serves both current students and future Greenies for years to come.

Dedicated in October 2022, the Manning  Fieldhouse stands adjacent to the historic Valmont Building and newly constructed Rupa and Tarun Jolly Science and Technology Building, thereby completing a cohesive transformation of the south side of campus. Now, as our community gathers together in the stands of Michael Lupin Field, these buildings serve as a visual representation of Newman's continued commitment to enhancing the student experience.
Philanthropy at Work

The Comprehensive Renovation of Physical Education & Athletic Locker Rooms and Community Spaces project is made possible by philanthropic support. The generosity of donors that have allocated gifts specifically to this project gives the School the opportunity to enhance physical education and athletic locker rooms, and add much needed community spaces.
