The Jefferson Building

The Restoration and Modernization of the Original Building

Vision and Purpose

This signature renovation of the Jefferson Building thoughtfully modernizes and restores the historic beauty of Isidore Newman School’s first building, honoring its legacy as a Manual Training School rooted in the motto Discimus Agere Agendo - We Learn to Do by Doing. The project embodies Newman’s Five Guiding Frameworks and balances a timeless classical liberal arts education with a modern, innovative approach.

At the heart of this transformation is the creation of a state-of-the-art Academic Commons on the entire second floor – a spacious, inviting, and inclusive academic hub designed to support and strengthen all intellectual endeavors. This space highlights academic excellence on display, making learning visible through open spaces, natural light, and clean lines that reveal the building’s hidden historic features such as exposed trusses and arches. The Academic Commons centralizes key resources including a modernized library, academic technology, workspaces, and learning nooks for both individual and collaborative work. It also includes student support offices – learning specialists, health and wellness counselors, math and writing labs, and college counseling – bringing these essential services into the heart of the Upper School, where students spend much of their time, while remaining accessible to Middle School students as well.

Connected to the Academic Commons by an architecturally significant double-height ceiling and the restored original 1903 staircase, The Forum serves as an interactive gathering space. It is designed for individual reflection, small group collaboration, and midsize meetings, blending tradition with forward-thinking flexibility. The Forum fosters dialogue, peer engagement, and community building, embodying the project’s philosophy that academic spaces should serve both academic endeavors and community connection, as complementary purposes.

The transformation extends beyond the academic core. On the first floor, the administrative suite undergoes significant restorations, including the Head of School, Admission, and Advancement offices, along with the relocation and centralization of the Upper School Office. An enlarged, flexible conference and boardroom supports meetings and events, while enhanced campus connectivity integrates these spaces seamlessly into the life of the School.

Additional highlights include the revitalized courtyard which opens the south side of the Jefferson Building to light and landscape, further connecting indoor and outdoor learning and community spaces. This renovation exemplifies the juncture where classic meets current, demonstrating respect for historic mission and aesthetics while embracing contemporary educational needs. As the Academic Commons adapts to evolving modes of teaching and learning, this project champions a classic and current aesthetic; one that harmonizes tradition with innovation, beauty with simplicity, and academic rigor with social vibrancy to inspire future generations of Newman students.

This is truly a historic moment for Isidore Newman School, a transformational opportunity to honor our rich legacy while boldly investing in the future of our students. With your generous support, we can bring this visionary project to life.
