While the biographies of new faculty represent an impressive display of experience and credentials, the real story concerns Newman’s strength and visibility among national independent schools and the future strength of this already impressive faculty.
When we look to hire, we cast a wide net both in advertising, search consultants, and in the scope of our review. Jobs at schools like Newman have become very competitive, with numerous applicants for every spot. We look for experience first, most tellingly in a community like Newman, but degrees also are an important part of the equation. We look for a degree in the discipline for US and MS teachers, preferably a MA or PhD in the intended field of study as well; with LS teachers we look for degrees in elementary education and work beyond the BA.
Newman takes the hiring process very seriously. A small committee reviews applicants and rates them on these criteria, and then we engage in phone interviews of the shorter list of potential applicants. At this point we invite two applicants to campus for full-day interviews and teaching observation. Administration, chairs, and teacher give feedback and we do extensive background checks to ensure that no stone goes uncovered. When an offer is made, we feel very confident that we know the applicant and that they will be an excellent fit in our community and with our children.
Newman has been blessed in this process and continues to attract top applicants from across the country. New teachers this year come from California, Indiana, and New York, as well as locally from other peer schools. Newman has become increasingly competitive with our benefit package and with salaries, and anecdotal feedback suggests that we often acquire candidates in direct competition with other schools nationally with a similar, if not even more impressive reputation. Part of this is Newman and the wonderful group of people at the school, but part is the magical draw of New Orleans and the sense of community that is felt as soon as one spends time here. Whatever the case, if human capital is any indication of the strength of the business, we are thriving and positioning Newman to preserve, if not advance, the wonderful experience we have developed over the last century. Please take the time to look closely at the biographies of this year’s class—they are a welcome addition to our community and they represent a fascinating set of experiences along the way.
