Newman Students Take to the Stage for <i>Hairspray</i>

As if excelling at school and getting into college weren’t enough, scores of Newman middle school and upper school students toiled the fall away rehearsing and presenting Hairspray: The Broadway Musical. The Theater Department put on five shows of the musical, playing to a packed house each time. In addition to the 24 cast members, dozens of students teachers, and parents volunteered behind the scenes to bring the production to life. One of the best moments was when the group invited the Lusher Charter School’s Hairspray cast and crew to a show, and they sang a few numbers together on stage. This was probably the most ambitious theater production on Newman’s stage. It was a phenomenal production to watch, enriching for all, and a wonderful, proud moment in the School’s history. Thanks to an anonymous donor’s gift of $25,000 to this show, the set, costume design, and musical accompaniment were all of a professional caliber.
