How do you spell success? Winning a regional spelling bee is a good start. Srijan Duggal ’17 did just that – winning 1st place in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 12. Up against students from all around the state, Srijan out-spelled his opponents to take the regional title and move on to the national Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
To win the competition, the finalists had to spell not one but two words correctly. This made for some exciting final moments, as the students struggled with tongue-twisting and tricky spellings. With words such as tawdrily, acerbity, cinnabar, and tchotchke, this bee was anything but easy. Srijan correctly spelled mélange and paparazzo, for the win, and received his trophy. You can read a blow-by-blow account of the bee in this Times-Picayune story: Isidore Newman sixth-grader wins regional Scripps Spelling Bee.
At the end of May, Srijan and a guest will enjoy an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. for Bee Week 2011, which runs from May 29 to June 3. Please join us in congratulating him for his regional victory and best of luck at the Scripps National Spelling Bee!
