Jan Aronson ’67 Speaks to the Upper School

R. Hibbert
[FULL STORY]

To kick off Newman Arts Week, artist and alumna Jan Aronson ’67 spoke to the Upper School during assembly on Monday, March 21. Ms. Aronson, who currently lives and works in New York, spoke to the students about her life as an artist and the philosophy of following one’s dreams in life. She discussed the lessons that she learned from the first time that she entered a studio as a young adult to her success as a commercial artist.
Ms. Aronson had four pieces of advice for the students:
Step out of your comfort zone – just as athletes only get better if they push themselves, we can only improve ourselves if we take chances in life.
Make a list of five things you would like to be good at – keeping a list of goals helps keep them at the forefront of your mind. Reviewing them periodically helps you stay focused. Then work on one or more of them. What could it hurt?
Keep a sense of humor, and if you don’t have one, develop one – life is too short to take too seriously. Have fun and laugh; it will make life more bearable.
Have courage – to demonstrate this, Ms. Aronson pulled out her swimsuit that she wore during her high school time at Newman – a gutsy move, but she did win the state swimming championship while she was here!
Ms. Aronson’s work has been featured in nearly 40 solo exhibitions, and more than 40 group exhibitions around the United States and Europe. She has been a full-time artist since 1986. Prior to this she taught and created art and art history programs at Pratt Manhattan Center, New York; Johnson State College, Johnson, Vermont; Ethan Allen Community College, Manchester, Vermont; Stratton Mountain School, Stratton, Vermont; Dillard University, New Orleans, Louisiana; and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Ms. Aronson is the featured artist of Newman’s Arts week, which will includes a gallery opening of her “Water” collection March 24th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Reynolds Ryan Art Gallery. Ms Aronson also spent her time at Newman working closely with students in the classroom and in the studio. Some highlights include studio work with students, gallery tours and discussions, and a lecture on the history of portraits with upper school art history students. For those unable to attend the gallery opening, her work will be on display in the gallery during normal hours, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for the duration of her exhibition, which runs from March 17 to April 14.
