Newman Honors Legendary Coach Ed “Skeets” Tuohy

On Saturday, March 26, between 150 and 200 filled the Tuohy Gym to celebrate the memory of the man after whom the gym is named, Coach Ed “Skeets” Tuohy. This year marks the 50th anniversary since Coach Tuohy arrived at the School. To commemorate a great man, alumni, staff, and Tuohy family members filled the gym for the celebration.
The crowd gathered to hear speeches from Bob Lane ’64; Coleman Adler ’61, Coach Billy Fitzgerald, Athletic Director; Dr. T.J. Locke, Head of School; and Ed Tuohy ’76. The speakers relayed stories about being the best athletes they could be under the Coach, and the imprint he left on the School. Some stories were funny, while others were bittersweet, but all were moving.
Coach Tuohy arrived at Newman to coach football and basketball in the summer of 1960. We are commemorating the 50th year since his arrival. In his first year, the varsity football and basketball teams both went undefeated. The football team finished the season with an 8-0 record. This was the only undefeated football team at Newman in the last 70 years. The basketball team won 32 straight games, including the state championship. His overall win-loss record was 403-74.

Coach Tuohy passed away in the early 1980s, and his legacy has left an indelible mark on the School and our alumni. In 1982, the Gym was dedicated to his memory and renamed in his honor.
