Tennis
In some of the hottest weather of the year so far, the Newman boys tennis team persevered in Monroe.
Though the Greenies were bested 11-10 for the team title by University High Baton Rouge, a fine effort was put forth by several players. Princeton Carter won two matches and earned state semifinalist status. Robert Eckstein was also a singles semi-finalist. The team of Sean Laughlin and Chris Koch made it all the way to the final match, earning state finalist status.
Congratulations to the Newman Greenies, State Runner-Up Division IV 2012.
Baseball
On Friday, May 4, the varsity baseball team took on the Calvary Baptist Cavaliers in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs before a large and very vocal Greenie crowd. Unfortunately, the Greenies lost 3-2 in a hard-fought and emotional contest.
The dedication and hard work of Coach Trey Guillot, his outstanding coaching staff (Ken Nagle, J.P. Martinez, and Brett Bonura), and the boys produced the deepest playoff run (quarterfinal round), best record (25-5), and best regular season ranking (#2) of any Newman baseball team in more than a decade. Congratulations on a great run!
Golf
The Newman boys golf team was one of nine teams to qualify for the Division IV State championship, which was held May 1 and 2 at the Atchafalaya Golf Club in Patterson, Louisiana. The Newman team finished 6th in the state in Division IV. The winning team was Calvary Baptist from Shreveport. The individual winner was Sam Burns from Calvary Baptist who shot a six-under-par 138 for 36 holes.
For 36 holes the Newman scores were:
Robert Poche 166
Joe Maruri 170
Russell Gardner 174

Congratulations on a great season, golfers!
