Sole Searching: Nike Reuse a Shoe Gives Your Old Sneakers a New Life

[FULL STORY]

Newman Middle School’s Green Team is collecting used running or tennis shoes for the Nike Reuse a Shoe program. This program collects worn-out sneakers to be reused as sports equipment. The donated shoes are de-soled and then ground up to make rubbery surfaces like those in play yards, artificial turf fields, or running tracks. Seventh grader and Green Team member Audrey Singer said, “We are fortunate to have great athletic facilities here. Donating your shoes can help make that possible for other kids.”

To help collect the shoes, the Green Team has set up three donation boxes next to the Middle School Office, labeled for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The grade that collects the most shoes will win a dress-down day. The boxes will be accepting shoes through December 13, so please bring in your shoes in the next week. Sneakers in any condition can be donated. “They don’t have to be in good condition, but they do have to have soles. That’s what they grind up and reuse,” said Singer.

If you or any member of your family has worn-out athletic shoes that are taking up space at home, donate them and give them a new life through the Nike Reuse a Shoe program. The Green Team’s Sophie Fuselier highlighted several benefits to donating. “You will clear the clutter from your house, help reduce waste, and help the Green Team. Plus, the winner of the competition gets a dress-down day,” she said.

Help make a difference, and plan to donate your used athletic shoes. If you would like to learn more about the Green Team’s Reuse a Shoe Drive, including the dos and don’ts of donation, view the Reuse a Shoe PowerPoint presentation. To learn more about the Nike Reuse a Shoe program, click here.
