Newman Celebrates Mr. Prescott’s 50 Years of Service at Founder’s Day

It is impossible to describe in this short amount of time what Mr. Prescott has meant to our School. He is nothing less than a Newman legend, a tremendously dedicated educator who has shaped the lives of generations of Newman students since he arrived here in 1966. H. Davis Prescott came to Newman as an English teacher. He also taught civics and served as Middle School principal before becoming our librarian in 1976 upon the retirement of Erminia Wadsworth. There he has stayed for 40 years, holding down the fort with warmth, caring, a sharp intellect, and a unique sense of humor.

 

Over the years, Mr. Prescott’s dedication to the library and its collections has never waned. We know the enthusiasm with which he responds to even the humblest research question. His commitment to the library as a vital repository of information and knowledge sends a powerful signal to students. In Mr. Prescott’s world, learning is about digging, uncovering, comparing sources, and drawing conclusions. In our technology-steeped culture that promises easy answers, but rarely delivers, Mr. Prescott and his library remind us that learning is hard work. He reminds us daily of the importance and value of rigorous intellectual endeavor. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to our School. I am not sure there is anyone who loves Newman more.
