Coaching at the high school level is an opportunity to teach young men and women the value of kindness, honesty, respect, responsibility, hard work, competition and teamwork. Sports allows young people to learn these qualities through the experience of facing challenges together. They instill these qualities into their lives each day on the practice field and in competition. It is my job to inspire them to take advantage of this opportunity and incorporate what they learn in all aspects of their lives. It is my job to place the overall welfare of the student-athlete above other considerations, and to promote athletics as a receptive setting for teaching and learning and to promote educational value in both preparing for competition and actual competition.
A team’s success is mostly measured by its season record and overall amount of victories, yet winning is only a minor part of success. Success alone does not make a team great until it is paired with effective coaching. Effective coaching runs deeper than wins and losses, it also includes reaching athletes on an individual level. Coaches who focus on positive, personal relationships with their athletes are ensuring success beyond their record on the field.
