In the 2024–25 school year, 217 Upper School students at Newman enrolled in at least one AP course. With more students participating than ever before and outcomes reaching record highs, our community has much to celebrate.
The data below highlights both the strength of our students’ performance and the success of our commitment to expanding access while maintaining academic excellence. We are thrilled to share some results from a truly banner year in our AP program.
- Overall performance: In 2025, our students achieved a 94.93% passing rate, representing a 16% increase from 2023. The national passing average across all AP courses was 61%.
- Participation and access: We administered 461 AP exams last year, up from 384 two years earlier. Unlike schools that restrict enrollment to protect scores, we expanded access to AP courses while still improving outcomes.
- Course-specific excellence examples: In AP U.S. History, 100% of 63 students passed (vs. a global average of 73%). In AP Calculus BC, 95% of 21 students passed (vs. a global average of 78%). In AP Chemistry, 92% of 26 students passed (vs. a global average of 78%).
- Higher achievement levels: The number of exams earning a 4 or 5 increased by 30.6% over the last two years. In 2023, 42% of AP exams at Newman earned a 4 or 5. In 2025, that figure rose to 73%.
- Fewer low scores: In 2025, only 6% of all AP students did not pass their exam. This is a dramatic drop from two years earlier.
By nurturing a strong culture of good pedagogy, dynamic instruction, and professional development, these impressive results celebrate great teaching and learning across the entirety of Newman’s Upper School, not just in AP courses.
“Our mission calls for ‘academic excellence within an inclusive community,’ and this year’s AP success reflects that ideal perfectly,” said Head of Upper School Erik Cooper.
Congratulations to Newman’s 121 AP Scholars!
63 AP Scholars with Distinction - Students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more AP exams.
