What city on Narragansett Bay hosts the longest-running Jazz festival? Through which countries does the Nile flow? What South American nation boasts a capital with the highest elevation? Luke Andel ’20 knows. This geographical whiz and Newman eighth grader defeated 83 other aspiring geographers to win the 2016 Louisiana State Geo Bee.
Despite a revamped and decidedly more difficult set of questions this year, Luke breezed through the preliminary rounds, not missing a question until the final round. In the end, he emerged victorious, and he will represent Louisiana in the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. May 22-25. To put it in perspective, out of more than 3 million children who participated in a school bee this year, Luke is one of 52 who will advance to the national competition. Congratulations, and good luck, Luke!
