Cross Country Teams, Individuals Win District Championships

The Newman Boys and Girls Cross Country teams both won district championships on November 2 at Audubon Park. This was 21st consecutive District Championship for the boys. Congratulations to Michael Brown ’17 and Jessi Rulh ’18, who were the individual champions as well.
 
Because of his outstanding performance, Michael will be named the male recipient of the Chevron Scholar Athlete of the Week award at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Quarterback Club luncheon on Tuesday, November 8. Michael will also be recognized on the field during the 2016 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on December 17 as well as at a Pelicans basketball game where there will be a drawing for one male and one female to receive a $5,000 scholarship.
 
Final congratulations to our 12 Cross Country seniors: John Adler, Ram Ayyala, Michael Brown, Lydia Calhoun, Carter Carey, Srijan Duggal, Lindsey Gibert, Douglas Le Clercq, Stephanie Rehkopf, Addie Grace Rome, Marcy Williams, and Brooke Yacavone.
 
Up next, the State Cross Country meet will be held on Monday, November 14 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Seven girls and seven boys will represent Newman at the State Championships. The Girls team remains ranked #4 in the Advocate Small School rankings and the Boys team is ranked #6.
