Newman Students Honored for their Artwork by National Organization

[FULL STORY]

Four Newman students received awards or honorable mentions for their work from the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Each year, the New York-based organization presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to recognize the outstanding artistic and literary talent of students in grades 7 to 12 from around the country.

Two Newman seniors and two sophomores have been recognized by the Alliance for their outstanding artistic talent. Taylor Bush ’18 received three Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her work – two Gold Keys and one Silver Key in Photography. Three other students received Honorable mentions from the Alliance: Helen Hawkins ’16 for her Portfolio, James Poche ’18 in Photography, and Barret Williams ’18 in Painting.

Founded in 1923, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers has recognized hundreds of young artists who later went on to make a name for themselves in the professional art world. Alumni of the program include artists of every stripe, including Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, John Lithgow, Robert Redford, and Ken Burns, among others.  Students submitting artwork or writing have an opportunity to receive scholarships or have their work exhibited or published.

This is the first year Newman has submitted artwork to the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers; it is amazing that their submission garnered so much recognition, and it is fulfilling for our students to have their work recognized by such a prestigious organization.
