Peyton Manning ’94 Pep Rally, and Newman Football in the News

[FULL STORY]

More than a thousand Newman students, faculty, and staff gathered in the School’s Cotonio Palaestra to hold an all-school pep rally for alumnus Peyton Manning '94 and the Denver Broncos, who playedthe Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Greenies from Pre-K to 12th grade crowded into the Fitzgerald-Skertich area in front of a 20-foot banner wishing the quarterback good luck in Sunday’s game.

With the band playing in the background, Head Coach Nelson Stewart greeted the crowd and talked about the impact that Manning has had on the school and the NFL. This event marks the sixth time a Manning has played in a Super Bowl, counting Eli manning ’99 and his bid with the New York Giants, as well as Peyton’s time with the Indianapolis Colts.

In related news, last week, Newman’s Varsity Football team got a special opportunity to see how the Saints prepare for pro games. The team was invited to the Saints training space, where they field tested a high-tech system of motion sensors that allow Sean Payton and the coaches measure the team’s performance. Each player was fitted with sensors that measure speed, position, and changes in direction, giving the coaches a wealth of data on how each member is performing and how the team works as a whole. Watch NBC’s Today Show this weekend for a special segment on the Greenie’s visit to the Saints training field and an interview with Sean Payton. The Today show will air Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., though we do not know on which show the segment will appear.
