Today Newman recognized the members of the 2016 Homecoming Court in a ceremony for the Upper School. Homecoming Queen Sarah Lane joined Homecoming King Michael Brown and the other members of the Court on stage to be presented to their peers, and to hear remarks by Stanford Rosenthal ’09.
Encouraging students to question unstated expectations for their lives, Rosenthal spoke about his journey toward coming out, and about his decision as a junior in college to pursue a career in Silicon Valley, forgoing a degree. He acknowledged that the non-traditional career path he followed is not for every student, but said he hopes Newman graduates remain thoughtful and aware of the many ways one can be successful. Rosenthal said that he hopes tangible creative work – building, gardening, learning a craft – figures in to graduates’ concept of success alongside their intellectual pursuits.
Following the presentation and remarks, the Homecoming Court recessed and joined their parents, families, friends, and teachers in the Reynolds Ryan Gallery for a special reception.
Homecoming culminates in tonight’s varsity football game against Pope John Paul II, where the court will be presented at halftime. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. on Michael Lupin Field, and all members of the Newman community are invited to attend. A special tailgate party for Newman alumni and their families will take place prior to the game at Dara and Dale Smith’s house, 1803 Jefferson Avenue, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Members of the 2016 Homecoming Court are Graham Drennan, Carter Carey, Srijan Duggal, Peyton LeCorgne, Felipe Lobo-Koerich, Meredith Mentz, Christopher Lane, Christy Mo, Miles Lapeyre, Daphne Moses, Bo Marcus, Ellanor Patton, Meyer Winsberg, Simi Sadhwani, Shuzheng Zheng, and Marguerite Walk.
