Newman Celebrates Homecoming 2017

Today Newman recognized the members of the 2017 Homecoming Court in a ceremony for the Upper School. Homecoming Queen Izzy Lane joined Homecoming King Calder Schmidt and the other members of the Court on stage to be presented to their peers, and to hear remarks by Jay Lapeyre ’71.

Lapeyre, President of Laitram LLC, a nationally respected business and civic leader, and a member of Newman’s class of 1971, shared memories of his years at Newman and lessons from his professional life. Recalling Newman’s motto of Discimus Agere Agendo (“We Learn to Do by Doing”), Lapeyre remarked that the Newman experience has always emphasized the process of learning, not the end goal of achievement, however it is defined. In life, he said, as at Newman, “The learning is in the work.”

Following the presentation and remarks, the Homecoming Court recessed and joined their parents, families, friends, and teachers in the Reynolds Ryan Gallery for a special reception.

Homecoming culminates in tonight’s varsity football game against Lusher, where the court will be presented at halftime. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. on Michael Lupin Field, and all members of the Newman community are invited to attend.

Joining Lane and Schmidt, members of the 2017 Homecoming Court are AK Aluise, Isaac Andry, Finn Bendana, Hackett Cummins, Riley Demps, Booker Jones, Julia Nelson, Connor Page, Di’Jonai Press, Adele Reynoir, Jack Reynolds, Lady Reynolds, Helena Stanley, and Barret Williams
