Girls and Boys Swim Teams Each Win State Championships

In early November, both the Girls and Boys Swim teams took home State Championships for their performance at the state meet in Sulphur. Remarkably, this is the third year in a row that both teams have brought home the championship.

As in past years, every member of the team contributed meaningfully to the victory. Coach Kristi Rigterink, in her first year as Head Coach, led a program with an emphasis on depth-of-talent and rigorous preparation. Depth and hard work make this a special team, according to senior captain Connor Page ’18:

“Sometimes in swimming there’s a tendency to rely on a few strong swimmers. It’s great to see that we don’t need that as a team,” he said.

The Boys and Girls Swim teams practice together and travel together, making the team atmosphere especially close and supportive. It’s only fitting that they should win championships together.

“We are each other’s biggest fans. If we’re not swimming we’re right next to the pool cheering on the one in the water,” Senior Captain Emily Nguyen ’18 said.

In recent years, swimming has become one of our School’s most successful athletic programs, with the Girls program earning a total of 15 State Championships, and the Boys 12. We are proud that Newman is known throughout the region as a swimming powerhouse and perennial State contender.
