Students designed, built, and tested working catapults and trebuchets as part of a special project in teacher Robby Harris’s Upper School Physics course. The project combined an engineering and design challenge with an opportunity to deepen understanding of physics principles.
A team of Newman students won several honors in the in the annual city-wide French Oratory Contest, hosted by the Council of French Societies. The yearly contest rates French students on their oratorical ability, fluency, and understanding of the French language.

On August 23, the mothers of Newman Football team took to Lupin Field for an annual tradition, Mom’s Night. Newman incorporated the August 21 partial eclipse into the school day so that students could experience and learn from the rare occurrence. Guided by our science faculty in all divisions, students in Lower, Middle and Upper School viewed the eclipse through NASA-approved glasses and pinhole viewers they made themselves.
This morning we gathered on Lupin Field to kick off the school year with an all-school assembly. More than 1,000 students in grades Pre-K to 12 donned green and white sunglasses to hear a welcome from student leaders and Head of School Dale M. Smith. On their last official day on campus before Awards Night, the seniors joined the underclassmen to celebrate Move-Up Day, and then gathered as a class on the Michael Lupin Field to count down to the final bell.

Newman is excited to announce construction is underway on a new Science and Technology Center. In April the School broke ground on a 30,000 sq. ft. building with state-of-the-art classroom laboratories, Signature Labs for long-term experiments, collaborative work spaces, and a new Makerspace.
For the 18th annual Warren G. Moses History Lecture, the School invited noted commentator, historian, and author Dr. Douglas Brinkley to Newman to speak with the students about World War II.
Founder’s Day 2017 will be one to remember. The School came together to award certificates to recognize the dedication of our faculty and staff, but the program also included some surprises, including naming of the next Joseph C. Morris Endowed Chair in Science and Math, and the retirement announcement of a Newman legend.

The Girls beat Catholic New Iberia 7-1 at home on Monday. They will take on the #1 seed Ascension Episcopal at 4 p.m. on Friday at Ascension in Lafayette.
The Boys beat Northlake Christian 2-1 in a thrilling quarterfinal match Tuesday night on Michael Lupin Field that ended with an overtime header by Junior William Reynoir. The match was a repeat of last year’s Championship, which Newman lost. Newman will play #4 seed Evangel Christian at 5 p.m. on Friday at Newman. Last year both teams reached the State finals and the Girls team brought home the State Championship trophy.
Two-time Super Bowl champion and Newman graduate Eli Manning ’99 was one of two athletes awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award during a special ceremony on February 4, 2017. Manning, along with Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, accepted the award at the Sixth Annual NFL Awards ceremony. The award is presented to National Football League athletes to “recognize excellence on and off the field.” Manning was honored in part for his volunteer efforts, which include his longtime habit of visiting hospitals, working with the March of Dimes, and his partnership with Tackle Kids Cancer. Melissa Block and Stefan Fatsis are internationally renowned journalists who also happen to be husband and wife. On Friday, January 13, 2017, the pair visited Newman to deliver the Bernard Hirsch Herman Memorial Lecture and became the first dual lecturers in the series’ 10-year history.
Young alumni attending college returned to Newman on January 6 for a luncheon and first-ever Career Prep Symposium. Organized by the Alumni Relations Department, the symposium was meant to offer young alumni advice from seasoned professionals about the job market and establishing a career after college.
