Children who come into the Lower School are welcomed into their classes and find a place that is especially crafted for them each year by our exceptionally talented and caring faculty."

Kay Mason, Head of Lower School

Childhood is a journey, not a race.

Throughout their exciting journey in Newman’s Lower School, children will see themselves as authors, musicians, scientists, mathematicians, artists, historians, performers, linguists – and much more.

Through robust curricular experiences, and with the guidance and support of dedicated teachers, our students become comfortable stretching and reaching for personal goals. Every classroom is alive with a sense of curiosity and engaged learning.

Guiding students to reach for and achieve their potential is a critical component of a strong academic program. At Newman we focus on educational best practices to meet the needs of the whole child. We strive to maintain a learning environment that engenders dynamic teaching and learning and a sense of security. The Lower School program attends to the social and emotional development of children at each level.

A child’s innate desire to flourish is complemented by the tapestry of rich offerings, talented teachers, and strong programs: for example, our robust World Language program begins in Pre-K with exposure to both French and Spanish for all students. In first grade, students choose a single language to further develop their skills and to explore more deeply the cultures associated with that language. Lower School arts programing includes instrumental and vocal music, drama and movement, and visual arts. Through our Physical Education curriculum, students develop motor skills and explore fitness while building the interpersonal skills required to be part of a team. I invite you to explore more about our special programming – including Singapore Math and Balanced Literacy that form the foundation of our math and reading instruction – by visiting our Curriculum page.

Finally, the Lower School journey integrates Newman’s Core Values of honesty, kindness, respect, and responsibility in every aspect of the student experience. We call this the Newman Way. Our community embraces these values, modeling them in our relationships and incorporating them into our instruction.

Though exposure and immersion into a rich learning environment with caring community members, the Lower School journey is designed to engage young minds and to develop the whole child. We encourage you to learn more about our School, and we look forward to getting to know you and your family.

Best,
