Financial Aid at Newman

Committed to enrolling the best students in the greater New Orleans area regardless of socio-economic status, Isidore Newman School admits students without regard to race, religion, color, gender, national and ethnic origin, physical handicap, or sexual orientation, to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities available to students. It does not discriminate in the administration of educational policies, financial aid programs, athletic programs, or any other school-administered programs.

While the cost of a Newman education is significant, we believe the value is greater and lasts a lifetime. The School offers financial assistance to those who demonstrate financial need for the grades Pre-K through 12 (financial aid is not available for Green Trees). For the 2023-24 school year, 24.6% of the student body received aid totaling approximately $3.3 million.

Frequently Asked Questions

List of 10 frequently asked questions.

  • Who can apply for financial aid at Newman?

Families who receive aid represent a wide range of financial backgrounds. While the primary responsibility for financing the student’s education rests with the family, any family who is unable to afford the full cost of tuition may apply for financial aid. Applying for financial aid will not affect one’s chances for admission.
  • Is financial aid available for Green Trees Early Childhood Village?

Finacial aid is available for parents of children in grades Pre-K through 12. Financial aid is not available for Green Trees students.
  • How do I apply for financial aid?

Instructions on applying for financial aid can be found on Newman’s website under the Tuition and Financial Aid tab in the “downloads” section. A completed application including both the online application through SSS and all required tax forms including the form 1040 with all attachments and W2 forms. Additional documentation may be requested from a family if needed. The application is completed online and all requested forms should be submitted directly to SSS as well either via computer uploading or through the mail. No information should be sent directly to Newman.
  • How much financial aid can a family expect to receive?

Despite Newman’s strong commitment to our financial aid program and to the enrollment of an economically diverse student body, it is possible that the number of students who qualify for financial aid is greater than we are able to support in any given year. Some students who have been admitted to Newman could be denied aid or placed in the financial aid waiting pool. For more information, see our Financial Aid Program document which outlines the School’s policies on financial aid.
  • Do financial aid awards stay the same every year?

Financial aid is granted on a yearly basis and renewal is not automatic. Subsequent aid will be based on the submission of a current financial aid application. Awards to returning families are also dependent on the student’s satisfactory progress, responsible citizenship, and the family’s commitment to the purposes and policies of the School.
  • How is financial need determined for parents who are separated, divorced or who were never married?

Financial need is determined by a family’s ability to meet educational expenses, not by a willingness to pay. In most cases, the Financial Aid Committee will make an award only after considering the financial resources of both parents. Therefore, each parental household must complete the full application process.

If either parent remarries, the financial information of the stepparent must be included on the financial statement in order to allow us to assess the true financial position of the applicant family. We will take into consideration individual financial arrangements as well as obligations of the parent and stepparent to their other children as we process financial information.

If one parent is not involved in the child’s life, please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss the situation.
  • Who qualifies for financial aid?

Families applying for financial aid do so through an online application at School and Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS). The application takes into account many factors including income and taxes, basic living expenses, parental and student assets, debts, family size, and number of children attending tuition-charging schools and colleges. After reviewing the information received from SSS, Newman applies its own financial aid policies and determines the family’s “estimated family contribution” (EFC). If the EFC is less than the cost of tuition, a family qualifies for aid.
  • When can I apply for financial aid for the 2024-25 school year?

The SSS site will open for the coming school year by October 1, 2023. Most families do not apply until the end of December or the beginning of January when their 2023 income information becomes available. Applications should be completed in time for the January 26, 2024 deadline. Applications submitted after that deadline will still be accepted, but will not be considered until all other applications received by the deadline have been reviewed. It is advisable for families to make every effort to meet the deadlines for admission and financial aid.
  • Who will see my application?

The Financial Aid Committee is a small group of school administrators. The Financial Aid Committee treats your financial aid application and award with the strictest confidentiality. We expect families receiving aid to do the same and not discuss their aid with other parents or with teachers. Failure to honor this policy could result in withdrawal of the award or jeopardize your eligibility for a future award.
  • What if I still have questions about financial aid policies and procedures?

Families should feel free to contact the School at any time to discuss their questions and concerns. Please contact Lauren Haro at (504) 896-6371.
