Project Overview

In the fall of 2018, Isidore Newman School opened the Rupa and Tarun Jolly Science and Technology Building on its Uptown campus. The 30,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility houses the Middle and Upper School Science program, with floors dedicated to the Life Sciences, Applied Chemistry, and Physics & Design.

An important phase of a long-term master plan to maintain the highest quality program for Newman students, the Rupa and Tarun Jolly Science and Technology Building inspires a new generation of innovators in the sciences, engineering, research, and medicine.

About the Science and Technology Center

The Rupa and Tarun Jolly Science and Technology Building is a three-story facility with nine classroom laboratories and three signature lab& spaces allowing for special multidisciplinary explorations in areas such as biotechnology, genetic engineering, energy systems, robotics, and design. Classroom laboratories allocate ample space and are outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment to allow experiments to blend seamlessly into classroom instruction.

The building also houses a brand-new Makerspace and Ideation Lab, which provides students access to the latest technology to explore limitless possibilities in creative design and problem solving.

Architecturally, the Rupa and Tarun Jolly Science and Technology Building combines a traditional silhouette and roof line with distinctive design elements. A grand entrance atrium spans multiple stories, and large windows provide a light and airy feel. Classrooms have glass walls to allow students to observe labs and activities taking place within them. Artfully exposed structural beams, electrical conduits, pipes, and HVAC ducts highlight the engineering that lies underneath the structure.

In developing this building, Newman was guided by its science faculty and employed a leading national consultant on educational lab design to address the needs of teachers and students with an eye toward 21st-century science. Newman faculty and administrators also toured science facilities at the nation’s top independent schools.
Classroom Highlights
  • Three signature lab spaces that inspires innovative and multidisciplinary explorations in biotechnology, genetic engineering, engineering and design, robotics, and energy systems, and encourage partnerships with outside organizations and corporations.
  • Nine integrated classroom/laboratories for Middle and Upper School biology, chemistry, and physics allows for collaborative projects and seamless transition between classroom instruction and hands-on learning in the lab.
  • State-of-the-art Makerspace and Ideation Lab gives students access to the latest technology to explore limitless possibilities in creative design and problem solving.
  • Community space, green spaces, and seating areas provide non-traditional environments for study or lessons.
  • An Energy Use Dashboard and exposed ducts are on display as teaching tools about the engineering of heating and cooling systems.
  • Convertible classrooms can be darkened for Newtonian optics study and experiments.
