Commencement of the Class of 2017

Isidore Newman School held its 109th Commencement on May 31, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in Tulane’s McAlister Auditorium.

Head of School Dale M. Smith welcomed guests and delivered his remarks to begin the program. He was followed by seniors Daphne Moses and Meyer Winsberg, who were selected by their classmates to give the student addresses, and by the Chair of Newman’s Board of Governors, Ann Thorpe Thompson ’74, who delivered the Commencement address. The Class of 2017 then received their diplomas in turn from Smith and Thompson. Finally, Upper School history teacher and Class Dean Michael Lemon presented the 96 members of the Class of 2017 to the assembled audience of parents, extended family, friends, and Newman faculty and staff.

The Class of 2017 has shown leadership in all areas of school life. They have excelled in the classroom, on the playing field, on the stage, and in the studio. Among their many achievements this year are leading five state-championship winning teams and sending three students to compete in the International Science & Engineering Fair in May. Their individual accomplishments are too numerous to list, and their intellectual and personal growth have been inspirational.

The Class of 2017 began Wednesdsay evening as Newman seniors, and ended it as alumni. We are so proud of all they have accomplished – and we anticipate greater achievements from them as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. Congratulations, graduates!
