Students Win Big at Science and Engineering Fair

Of the 25 Newman students who participated in the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) virtually in late February, three earned first place in their entry category, and many received additional awards from foundations and corporations for their projects. Also, as a Grand Prize Winner, senior Sophia Landry ’21 earned the opportunity to compete virtually in the International Science Fair in May. 

The first-place winners and their entry topics are:
  • Sophia Landry ’21 – Analysis of organic and inorganic pesticides (1st Place, Plant Sciences, Grand Prize Winner, 1st Place USDA Research Award)
  • Sarah Henry ’22 and Chloe Incaprera ’22 – Effects of sulfur compounds on soil pH (1st Place, Chemistry; $500 Van Lue Habeeb Award)
Students placing 2nd or 3rd are:
  • Emily Alfortish ’21 –  Effect of clams on nitrogen levels in water (2nd Place, Environmental Science, winning 1st Place NOAA, Mensa, and Stockholm Water Prize Awards)
  • Lia Bu ’21 – Mask wearing analysis (2nd Place, Behavior & Social Sciences)
  • Liam French ’22 and Robert Trelo ’22 – Bioengineering amoebas (2nd Place, Cell & Molecular Biology)
  • Adelaide Jackson ’23 – Comparison of different sweeteners (3rd Place, Chemistry)
  • Addie Lemann ’21 – Analyzing political affiliation and racial equality (3rd Place, Behavior & Social Sciences)
Newman’s first and second-place winners are automatically qualified to compete virtually at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair later this month.  

Three of Newman’s participants are students in Dr. Kern’s Science Research and Design course, which challenges students to develop and complete an independent research project. Others developed projects in Mr. Jones AP Biology class.

In addition to the individual student awards, Newman shared the Patrick F. Taylor Award for a high level of student participation in the GNOSEF.
